STATEMENT
Mia Middleton (b. 1988, London, England; based in Lisbon, Portugal) is a painter whose work examines gesture, performance, and states of emergence. Her paintings suspend bodies, objects, and interiors in moments of partial visibility, where action is interrupted and meaning remains provisional. Rather than treating these interstitial views as subordinate to a larger narrative, Middleton renders them as complete in themselves, allowing a single element to carry the full weight of the image. Working through reduction, tonal restraint, and carefully staged ambiguity, her work produces sustained tension, operating within a mnemonic register that records duration rather than resolution.
Middleton has recently been included in exhibitions at The Corridor Foundation, Shenzhen, China; Nicelle Beauchene Gallery, New York, NY and the Liverpool Powerhouse Museum, Sydney, Australia. In 2026, Middleton will present her second solo exhibition with Roberts Projects, LA, as well as contributions to group exhibitions at the Kunsthal N, Copengagen, Denmark and Rodolphe Janssen, Brussels, Belgium.
